Loose Threads
In this post I am going to live up to the name Cabbages and Kings. I am going to ramble on about all sorts of things and show you (very many) photographs, just as if you were an old friend come to visit at my home.
Below is a photograph of my latest sewing project: a little Christmas doll-dress. The pagoda sleeves were my sister’s idea, and I am very happy with them. I am currently trying to sew eyelet-lace undersleeves and pantaloons, but the elastic doesn’t want to cooperate. I’ll have to try again and show you when I’m done!
This has been a very rainy week, which has been very good for the garden - and weeds.
My littlest brother and I enjoyed galloping through the puddles. I felt a trifle silly at first, but it was a lot of fun!
In between showers, I went outside to enjoy the cool weather and to take photographs. (The lighting has been perfect!) Once I even met a handsome young man on horseback. He was very sweet and told me that he would protect me while I was outside.
Today was the first “cold” day of the year. I could have survived without one, but ... I love sweaters so I put one on anyway. For breakfast, I made spiced apple-cider oatmeal. I hope to add a recipe section to Handmaidens soon. This one will be included.
Here is a special photographic update on what is happening in the garden.
My brother’s corn has made a rapid appearance.
My sweet peppers have been doing marvelously well.
My chives are also doing well, though they are very slo-o-o-w growers. I am looking forward to garnishing our salads with these purple, onion-flavored pom-pom flowers.
This is one of three lone parsnips. I planted about fifteen seeds and was disappointed when three arrived - overdue. Then Papa told me that parsnips were very difficult to grow, and I was suddenly satisfied. Still, I think I’ll try to plant some more.
My English peas are nearly ready for a trellis. We’ll see when Papa has time ... Meanwhile they seem to be recovering from the dry weather they apparently suffered while we were away at Ocklawaha.
I have a special entry planned for next Tuesday, the last post before we celebrate Thanksgiving. You can all wait eagerly for one of our favorite short stories: “Must You Keep Your Heart in Cold Storage?” Then, the Friday after, we’ll discuss a favorite day in our home: Stir-up Sunday.
