The Week of Bethlehem
The Week of Bethlehem
The second week of Advent is the week of Bethlehem. Bethlehem was a very lowly town and the last place you might expect as the stage for the entrance of the King of kings into the world. Still, God chose these humble circumstances to send us our Savior. What an encouragement!
Have one of the family light the first and second candles. With the lighting of the candles talk of Jesus as the Light of the World. “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.” (Isaiah 60:1-3)
Explain that this second candle is the candle of Bethlehem and that the liturgical purple color is a symbol of penance, longing, and solemnity as we wait for the coming of Jesus Christ.
Throughout this week you will be reading and singing of the humble town of Bethlehem. We will learn that God moves even in small places. After joining hands about the Advent wreath, read and discuss the passage for each day and sing the corresponding hymn(s).
