Singin’ an’ Dancin’
Singin’ an’ Dancin’
Our friends (and most frequent commentators) at Princesses in Disguise have taken an interest in folk dancing, so we’re hoping to join them in steppin’ out with the Virginia Reel, the Circassian Circle, and the Patty-cake Polka, among others. This should prove quite fun, and we’re looking forward to it!
Having recently watched “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” with James Mason, we also had to look up Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor - such a haunting and lovely organ piece. It’s a new favorite here, though its dramatic nature doesn’t make for ideal background music. :)
Other than that, we are still enjoying our “family classics”: Mozart, Johann Strauss Jr., Andrea Bochelli, John Barry film tracks, the Josh Groban Tribute Band, and trumpet.
Despite being collectively poor at it, our entire family loves to sing and we enjoy doing it often. Here are very few of our most popular hymn requests, for you to learn and enjoy as well:
Alas! and Did My Savior Bleed? (At the Cross)
Brethren, We Have Met to Worship
(Give Me That) Old Time Religion
When the Roll is Called Up Yonder
We also sing folk songs, and number these among our favorites:
(I Wish I Was in) Dixie
Billy Boy, Billy Boy
The Camptown Races
Way Down Upon the Suwanee River
Yesterday night, my sisters and I learned a new favorite by listening to the West ladies sing in the Franklin Springs film Inherit the Land. It’s a beautiful, folksy song whose chorus goes like this:
‘Cause there’s green beans in the garden,
Clean clothes on the line;
Yeah, there’s little barefoot children
Playing beneath the grape vine.
The sun is shining bright
And the crick’s a’bubbling too.
We’ve got a lot to be thankful for,
And, Lord, I want to thank you.
