Nature Journaling
Nature Journaling
I have been working on my drawing and coloring skills. Although I haven’t a journal of my own, Littlest Sister always lets me use a corner in hers. I completed this entry last Saturday of an as yet unidentified tree. The illustrations were sketched in pencil, done over in pen, and colored in with colored pencils.
“When ripe, the seed cases fall to the ground, they split open at the tip [along] the three ‘seams’ to reveal [four] seeds. These are covered with a thin layer of scarlet pulp of which the birds are fond, and in this manner the seeds are dispersed. The seed cases dry in the sun and the hard points are quite painful to bare feet.”
“These seed cases are prime ammunition in playful backyard wars.”
“The seed cases as they grow on the tree.”
”Bottom view of un-opened seed case to show the three ‘seams’ along which it splits.”

Beautiful work! You’ve inspired me to get out my sketch book and continue honing my skills. I’m not very well versed in pencil art as yet, but am working through a book called Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, which combines art lessons with lessons on how the brain works. Fascinating.

Thank you for the recommendation! So far I have only been drawing by sight, but I do feel the need for a more formal approach. I’ll have to search the library catalogue...
I apologize for not replying sooner. Apple has been having a great many technical problems lately. I hope everything will progress smoothly now.
