Dew Drops
Dew Drops
“Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?” Job 38:28.
Littlest Sister brought me outside with the camera. “The dew is beautiful!” she told me, racing ahead. It was the early morning, and everything was fresh and cool and shimmering. Littlest Sister made a beeline for a clump of fruit trees in the backyard, and there I saw what we had come to see. The broad plantain eaves were covered with a trembling, twinkling sheet of dew drops arranged with almost mathematical precision.
There is such a sense of renewal and refreshment in a drop of dew. Wilted leaves perk up, buds swell, tender green stems stretch forth like slender banners of hope.
“For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease. Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground; [Yet] through the scent of water it will but, and bring forth boughs like a plant.“ Job 14:7-9
In the same way we can be a renewing and refreshing presence in the world. The Scriptures call the children of God flourishing olive trees, lilies among thorns, roses blooming in the wilderness. Yet the others are dry, thirsty, and wilted in a barren world that promises more than it gives. Offer them the Living Water. Pray that God would enliven them with Christ; he alone brings life to the soul.
“Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth, My doctrine shall drop as rain, my speech shall distill as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass: Because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness to our God.” Deuteronomy 32:1-3.
A dew drop hangs like a diamond pendant from the tip of a tomato leaf.
