A Front Garden
A Front Garden
[March 8, 2008, from my journal]
“Last Sunday I asked eight-year old [Second Brother] what five things he should like to have in a home. This is what he gave me: a log cabin, a tree house, horses, a farm, and ‘a white picket fence with lots of purple flowers—and pink too.’ He expressed his opinion that a cottage garden—’like Tasha Tudor’s’—would be a restful space of transition from the outside world to his house. ‘That way,’ he noted sagely, ‘if I was stressed out by my work, having to walk through the garden would help me not yell at my poor wife.’ I was surprised by this insight (and inwardly resolved to plant a front garden upon marriage!)”
Maybe this is something they should put in matrimonial books. What do you think?
I also used the painting above to illustrate one of my favorite poems about ‘the little brown house like a ground-bird’s nest.’ Go and read it!
