The Cathedral of Prayer
An awareness of our interdependence became vivid to me one evening as a friend and I sat before the fire puzzling over the hands clasped in prayer in a picture of Rodin’s “The Cathedral.” My guest said, “I have tried and tried to put my hands into that position and simply cannot.” Never before having noticed anything incomprehensible about these beautifully sculptured hands, now I too made an attempt. Suddenly, the two of us reached out to each other, and placing our right hands together formed such a handclasp as that in the great work of art. It takes the creative love of two individuals caring for each other and reaching up to God in their togetherness to break down man’s separate pride and build up the Cathedral of Prayer.
