Garden Life: Amaryllis
When a friend gifted us with two of these plants we assumed they were green bromeliads. I am sure she must have explained them to us, but we didn’t remember. We planted them at the front of the house, hoping they would grow out, but they never did. They were very sorry-looking—for bromeliads.
Imagine our surprise, then, when we stepped out one Sunday morning to find these two beautiful, bold flowers trumpeting on the front lawn! We had missed the buds entirely.
The flowers decorated the front of the lawn for more than a week. They were succeeded by a hard, green, three-knobbed seed-head that yellowed and thinned with age.
The seed-head continued to dry and then burst open at the seams, revealing dark paper packets, each holding a little seed.

They are so lovely! The seed head is so odd; I’ve never seen anything like that!
I just wanted to let you know that I have not forgotten about replying to your letter! In fact, I started a reply the very day I received your lovely letter, but I’ve been insanely busy trying to finish up school. and my dad had surgery, and my brother came out to visit, so the letter got put aside for a few days, but I will really try to send it out next week! I also wanted to let you know that I’ve posted on my Crunchy Con blog; you said in your letter that you had visited, but found no new posts, so I have really started to post again, and have several new posts on the way! —Elissa

Yes, that seed head was decidedly strange.
My, but you have been busy. I look forward to your letter!
I visited your Crunchy Con Blog and was thrilled to find not one but three updates. I hope to comment soon.
