BARBARA FURTUNA
O cruel fortune, merciless destiny, that weakens our hearts within us. Goodbye, Corscia, much-beloved mother.—Corsican song
I have enjoyed the beautiful polyphonic sound of Barbara Furtuna {translated ‘cruel fortune’} since first hearing the Via Crucis program with L’Arpeggiata. It was playing on the classical radio during Passion Week several years ago. Hazel and I listened together that evening, while piecing a puzzle together on our bedroom floor.
Via Crucis {translated ‘way of the cross’} melds seventeenth-century compositions with traditional folk tunes to tell the story of Christ’s passion. Visit the Barbara Furtuna YouTube channel, but be sure not to miss ‘Maria’ from Via Crucis.
{This medley offers a wide sampling of their music, or try another favorite of mine, ‘Anghjulina’ or ‘Su Vita Si.’}
