SCHOOL SCHEDULE {GRADES 1-3}
The idea of definite work to be finished in a given time is valuable to the child, not only in training him in habits of order, but in diligence; he learns that one time is not ‘as good as another’; that there is no right time left for what is not done in its own time, and this knowledge alone does a great deal to secure the child’s attention to his work.—C.M. Mason
When I hosted a screening of Enjoying the Early Years, I brought out books and materials I had used with my brother in preschool through first grade. One of these was a creased and scribbled time-table of the week's work, and I was very embarrassed when several ladies took pictures of it as an example for themselves. 'Oh,' I said, hovering behind them, 'that was just—no, don't take a picture of it—that's only to show how to make—wait—you guys!'
No one listened to me, and it horrifies me to think anyone is patterning their school schedules on something cobbled together at the end of a school year to help me wrap up those subjects I was in charge of teaching. :-)
So I shall now rectify the situation by sharing a better example, this based on the original time-table created for the PNEU schools. These time-tables are not written in stone, but are very instructive as examples of how certain educational principles work in daily life: short lessons, varied lessons and a wide curriculum. {Here is a great article on that very subject, from one of my favorite blogs. And here is a previous post of mine that elaborates on some of the subjects listed below.}
