INTRODUCTORY LATIN
One of my 2015 goals is to teach a semester of introductory Latin, to students grades 4 through 7. Part of the application process for teaching at local educational co-ops is to describe the class and syllabus. Here is a first draft that expresses my vision and scope.
Latina Christiana I is an award-winning introductory course written by Christina Lowe and published by Memoria Press. Based on the grammar stage of the classical trivium, the focus will be on acquiring basic grammar and vocabulary, while enjoying whole-language experience through recited prayers and hymns.
In addition to studying the language, students will hear the most beautiful music in history, view great works of art and architecture, study the geography of the Roman Empire, and discuss ancient history and values through adaptations of Plutarch's biographies.
Students will be encouraged to take pride in their class by voting on a club name and motto, and choosing their own Roman names. Game reviews—like spelling-bee style ‘Gladiators’ or Jeopardy-style ‘Centurion’—will add to the fun.
Notes:
Pronunciation. The ecclesiastical, or ‘Christian,’ pronunciation of Latin will be used in class. Read this online article on why the ecclesiastical is used over the so-called ‘classical’ pronunciation. The differences are not extreme, and your child should find it easy to learn the other pronunciation if necessary.
Nudity in Artwork. To respect the sensibilities of many different families, we will be using artwork that does not portray what are commonly considered private parts of the human anatomy. If you have any concerns, please contact me at any time.
Faith. The course materials used are published by a Protestant company. The fact that Romans worshiped false gods will be apparent and addressed in class discussion. If you have any concerns, please contact me at any time.
Prerequisites: This class is recommended for grades 4-7. There will be a refresher lesson on the eight parts of speech, but it will be assumed students are already familiar with their names and basic functions in the English language.
Homework: Students will be required to complete a 5-minute written vocabulary drill 5 days a week. They are encouraged to complete additional review and study if they or the teacher finds it necessary.
Supply Fee: A supply fee of [PRICE] will be charged for the purchase of a student workbook, quiz and test book, pronunciation CD and journal.
Other Supplies: Students are responsible to bring to class sharpened pencils with erasers, a black-ink pen, colored pencils, and post-it tabs. They will be sent to the supply table to purchase these if they do not bring them.
Additionally, there will be an in-class Toga Party on [DATE], and students are responsible to create their own costumes {i.e. white or red cloth, leaf crown, tin-foil armor, etc. as desired}.
