THE COMMUTE: KIND PEOPLE
My morning was not very good. I made a mistake, which was entirely my fault, and I beat myself up for it far too long, also my fault. I was glad of the bike-ride home for diffusing stress, but as I coasted along the road, I ended up rehearsing the mistake over before moving on to the too-familiar recitation of self-loathing.
Then a police car drove by, and the woman officer picked up her speaker and said, ‘Hello, ma'am. You look beautiful today.’
I ducked and grinned. There was no one to whom I might defer the compliment; I was alone on the bike path. She had definitely meant me! I basked in this glow for a long stretch.
She is so nice! I hope she does this regularly to people. I needed this after all the catcalls I've gotten. She is so nice! Who knows who she might meet? Her words could make a huge difference to someone!
I ‘woke up’ when I crossed the street, and tried to remember what I'd been thinking about. What had I been thinking about?
I remembered, and had to swallow a painful lump in my throat and blink back tears. Thank goodness for sunglasses! and kind people.
