IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DONE
Number 40 on my list of 'One Hundred Goals' is to lead a home-school study group; I am excited {and a little nervous!} to announce that the opportunity has come much sooner than expected.
A home-educating mother and friend approached me with the suggestion that she host and I lead a Charlotte Mason study group, at a time that I was especially impatient in the absence of just such a group.
I balked at the idea of leading the group myself; that was something I was going to do, you know, in the comfortable future when I actually had my own children to educate. In the interim, someone else was supposed to lead a group for me to attend. But... I had also hoped someone else would start an arts society, direct dramatic performances, and organize community dances.
Ha. Meet Madame Chairman, director of three productions, and the resident dance caller. But I still don't think of myself as someone who would do those things; I'm introverted, quiet, and a little lazy.
Then again, as my mother always says, 'If you want something done, you've got to do it yourself.' And my bossy-firstborn-child comes out raring as I chair meetings, enforce deadlines, organize rehearsals, and call the Virginia Reel {at the top of my lungs sans microphone, because microphones scare me}.
I am flattered and overwhelmed by the confidence of home-educating mothers in anything I may contribute to the beautiful work they do, and look forward to this opportunity to share my love for the philosophy and methods of Charlotte Mason.
The plan is to open next month with an overview of the Charlotte Mason education, followed by a monthly meeting to discuss Laurie Bestvater's seminal book The Living Page: Keeping Notebooks with Charlotte Mason. In spare moments these last few weeks, I have been planning the reading schedule, typing notes and summaries, sending emails about music a friend is recording for a related video project, and photographing nature journals.
Then in September I will begin teaching weekly folk-dancing classes, because someone needs to grow the local community of folk-dancers, and, you know, if you want something done...
