Who Hath a Book

The Oriental. Friedrich von Amerling.

Who Hath a Book

William D. Nesbit

Who hath a book

Has friends at hand,

And gold and gear

At his command;

And rich estates,

If he but look,

Are held by him

Who hath a book.

Who hath a book

Has but to read

And he may be

A king indeed;

His kingdom is

His inglenook;

All this is his

Who hath a book.

An ‘inglenook’ is the space on either side of a large fireplace.

Sleep Sweet

Portrait of the Princess Marie Franziska von Liechtenstein at Two Years of Age. Friedrich von Amerling. 1836.

Sleep Sweet

Ellen M. Huntington Gates

Sleep sweet within this quiet room,

O thou, who’er thou art,

And let no mournful yesterdays

Disturb thy peaceful heart.

Nor let tomorrow mar thy rest

With dreams of coming ill:

Thy Maker is thy changeless friend,

His love surrounds thee still.

Forget thyself and all the world,

Put out each garish light:

The stars are shining overhead—

Sleep sweet! Goodnight! Goodnight!
